ICU nurses train to care for the patients who need the most monitoring and treatment. They are usually only assigned two to three patients, but those patients are often so ill that they need constant attention. An ICU nurse will take care of patients who are 24 hours postoperative open heart, those who have survived cardiac arrest, those who need to be intubated, and those who are on the edge of possibly losing their lives.
