Harvest Your Own or at the Farmers Market
Convenient for the travel nurse is that root vegetables are available year round and can be stored
for extended periods of time. Only those that are firm, dense (heavy for their size), and free of soft
spots and blemishes are best selected. If greens are attached—as is the case with carrots and
beets—they should be fresh, bright in color, and stout.
Although quality root vegetables are carried by most grocers, taking the time to visit a local farmers
market or pick-your-own field will make your travel nurse meal that much more fulfilling. Make a day of it;
take your time; settle for only the best. PickYourOwn.org is a fantastic Internet resource for finding a
u-pick farm near you. Make your root vegetables the center of conversation.

There is a large component to travel nursing that involves nature. And along with it comes the responsibility to conserve, preserve, recycle, and refrain. Although most of the time it’s easier said than done, there are simple things in everyday travel nurse life that if we accomplish together, we can make a difference.
Conserve Energy - Shut the lights off when you don’t need them and unplug your toasters and microwaves when not in use. Travel nurses should keep the heat low or the AC high when no one is home—it only takes a few minutes for the temperature to adjust three to five degrees.
Preserve Nature –We suggest that travel nurses purchase products with biodegradable containers and wrappers whenever possible, or products sold in containers made from recycled goods. Being conscientious avoids the unintentional possibility of creating litter.
Recycle –Find out if your housing complex has a recycling program, and if not, locate the recycling plant in your area is and drop things off once a week—on your way to somewhere else, of course, making it essentially a recycled travel nurse trip! Remember: paper, plastics, glass, aluminum, and metal are recyclable. And again, purchase recycled goods as often as possible.
Refrain - Don’t throw fresh water down the drain. Shut off the faucet when you’re brushing your teeth or soaping your hands; be efficient in the shower.
If you’re a travel nurse that prefers to wash dishes by hand, fill a wash sink and a rinse sink to save even more of this precious resource.
Keep up the good work and our mountains, state parks, beaches, and natural wonders will be there on your next travel nurse assignment!
