"As reported on MSNBC, Yahoo Finance, Netscape Travel and more,
clever recruitment campaigns to put a dent in nurse shortage." |
 |
Nursing organizations and travel nursing employers around the
country are ingeniously attracting men to the nursing profession.
Innovative recruitment tactics and lucrative salary and benefits
packages are boosting nursing program enrollment and
luring men to the female-dominated industry. Roughly
six percent of the nation’s 2.9 million nurses are men,
up from 2.7 percent in 1980, reports the Department
of Health and Human Services.
One campaign launched recently by the Michigan Center
for Nursing features the slogan “It’s a Guy thing” printed
on thousands of posters distributed to career fairs, high
schools and colleges, while “Nursing…a real career for real men,” appears as the tag line on the Oklahoma Nurses Association second annual Men in Nursing Calendar.
“We expect men to have a positive impact on the current nurse shortage,” said Valerie Podwill, Recruitment Manager for travel nurse company 50 States Staffing. “Schools are expanding nurse curriculum in the U.S. and more male nurse graduates are entering the field.”

Travel nursing is wonderful in that you’re afforded the
time and amenities to maintain a sound mind and
healthy body. Eating right, getting enough sleep and exercise
all play a role in how well we cope and how fast travel nurses
react. Critical to physical strength and psychological prowess
are healthy internal body systems and quick-firing nerve
impulses that when functioning properly can make all the
difference in saving a life.
How’s your diet?
Diet is about what you eat when you eat it. Your body turns food it into energy like a car does gas. When the car doesn’t move; the gas just sits there—similar to how calories turn to fat when not used by the travel nurse body. Assigning a time and a purpose to certain food groups will give you the energy you need when you need it most, and let your body rest and relax when you don’t. |

In the morning or before your shift is the best time to eat complex carbohydrates and starchy foods like potatoes and bread. They give the body energy and will be burned as calories throughout the day. This is also a good time for travel nurses to get the protein they need to aid with muscle strength and recovery during times of physical exertion. |
| • |
On breaks, travel nurses should eat whole foods like fruit, nuts, trail mix items or natural snacks instead of candy bars to satisfy cravings and for energy. Processed sugar is one of the worst things you can put in your body and the calories in sugar are empty—meaning they have no nutritional value at all. |
| • |
Stay away from the vending machines. Clinical studies continue to indicate that processed foods in excess may lead to diminished health. Travel nurses should brown-bag shift food. |
| • |
During the shift, don’t eat big portions. They’ll make a travel nurse sluggish and tired. Large portions also overburden your digestive system and can lead to abdominal discomfort and cause gas and bloating. |
| • |
After the shift eat a well-balanced meal, but don’t overdo the animal fat. Have a protein, a starch and a green vegetable. Now’s the time for desert. |
| • |
Avoid too many CATS (caffeine, alcohol, tobacco) Coffee in excess and nicotine in general can have an adverse effect on your nervous system and your ability to think clearly—and don’t consider otherwise. As far as alcohol, one drink a day for women and two drinks for men is considered “moderate drinking” by the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services. All three CATs can adversely affect quality sleep patterns. |

The healthcare industry is short about 150,000 nurses this year, a figure expected to grow five times by 2020, per federal estimates, said Podwill. State colleges and universities around the country have reported graduating 25 percent more nurses in 2006 than the year before. Enrollment is up for men too, as A National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses indicates that roughly 13 percent of students enrolled in nursing schools are males, and more than 50,000 students pursued nursing education last year.
“It seems that recruitment campaigns depicting men in high tech hospital situations or portraying male nurses as heroes or lifesavers seem to be working for both schools and employers,” Podwill said, pointing to recruitment efforts by the Oregon Center for Nursing, which feature a snowboarder and rugby player poised under the headline “Are you man enough to be a nurse?” and another from travel nurse company American Traveler, targeting rescue workers, firemen and other civil service emergency personnel.
Travel nursing jobs at 50 States Staffing include free private housing, free health insurance, bonuses and reimbursements. Travel nurses can take family and pets on the road, or choose rent subsides if they own a house or have an apartment and would like to commute to an RN travel job close to home. A career in travel nursing offers men advance practice opportunities and flexible schedules, along with generous bonuses and enough job security to have a family.
“At first it was about the money,” said 28-year-old Wisconsin male travel nurse Eric D. “But now travel nursing fits in perfectly with our goal to raise children.”
