Sanibel Island is an absolute must-visit for travel nurses assigned to hospitals in Naples, Fort Myers or other Florida Gulf Coast travel nurse destinations. It’s an island jewel of relaxation, water sports, unbelievable dining, sea shelling and fishing. The tropical paradise is easily accessible on bicycle via the 2.8 mile Sanibel Causeway and boasts 26 miles of scenic bike paths and 17 miles of gorgeous, sandy beach. Apply with 50 States Staffing today.

Bicycles take travel nurses everywhere on Sanibel
The best way to see Sanibel is on bike. You’ll avoid costly parking and often congested traffic. Peddle to boutiques on Periwinkle Way or see exotic birds, gators and mangroves thriving in the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Winding bike paths take you to all of Sanibel’s awe-inspiring sights, wildlife sanctuaries, restaurants and shops. A bicycle will also get you to beaches difficult or impossible to reach by car.

Sanibel seashells are world famous
Because of the Island’s east / west geographical position in the Gulf, the tides constantly push unique, pastel-lined seashells up onto her shores. People come from all over the world just to hunt for that one-of-a-kind, special seashell found only on Sanibel.

“The fish was this big” – travel nurse fish tales
Great eatin’ sea trout, snook, cobia, grouper, dolphin and snapper are abundant in Sanibel waters. Some say it’s the finest fishing in all of Florida. Cast your line off the beach or take a charter into deeper water. Either way, your chances of snagging dinner are pretty good.

Don’t leave Sanibel without a Captiva sunset
Just over a small bridge at the tip of Sanibel is Captiva Island. It’s not as big or as bustling as Sanibel, but it’s just as beautiful. Sail on a pontoon at sunset or skim over the smooth, glassy waters of the Gulf on a jet ski. Captiva beaches are perfect for jogging, fishing and quiet times with your thoughts.

Nassau The Island of New Providence

10 Travel Tips
For the Bahamas

1.  Research destinations on the Internet before      leaving for the port.
2.  Take the spirit of the islands with you; life is      much different there than on the mainland.
3.  Taxis are a good way to go a short distance      and to take you to island attractions.
4.  When bicycling or renting mopeds or scooters,      stay in commercial areas and along the      shoreline. Don’t wander the countryside      aimlessly. Always know where you’re headed      and how to get back to the boat.
5.  Feel free to bargain with shop owners; they      expect it.
6.  The islands cool a little during the winter      months and at night. Bring a pullover.
7.  The summer sun can be very intense. Be smart      about sun protection and staying hydrated.
8.  Hurricane season is from June to November
9.  Take advantage of duty-free merchandise on      the cruise ship
10.  Don’t worry. Be happy. Leave the hospital      behind for the trip.

The Straw Market is the first sight portside.
You’re encouraged to visit this Bahamian phenomenon. Here you find unique island goods and beautifully-colored apparel made by locals. At first you’ll be pressured by craftsman and vendors to “buy now,” but soon realize the fun and adventure in negotiating them down in price. Don’t take their first or second offer. Make a mental note of the merchandise you want, then attempt to bargain with these vendors on at least three or four different occasions while you’re there. You’ll be amazed at how the price drops twenty, fifty and even eighty percent when you take your time and “stay friendly” at the straw market.

Downtown is fairly compact and easily explored on foot.
The smell of Satay grilling in the open air wafts through the streets and you instantly get hungry. “Follow your senses.” Grab a bite, do some shopping, then take in some more Nassau highlights. There’s historical Fort Charlotte with underground dungeons and secret passages built in 1787, and the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservancy Center, where exotic birds and animals thrive in natural habitats and paths guide you through the jungle and to special island exhibits. Read some Internet reviews and plan some attractions before you leave for Nassau. This way you can make the most while you’re there and see the best of the island.

Grand Bahama - Freeport

You'd be surprised at how affordable many of these cruises can be. Play your cards right and spend less going to Freeport for the day than you do at the mall in three hours. Day cruises to Freeport and the Bahamas start anywhere from $119 and up, depending time of year.

Freeport's International Bazaar with more than 100 shops and restaurants is to shopping what the island's Xanadu Beach is to water sports and lounging in the sun. For the more adventuresome, skydiving over Grand Bahama is life-inspiring and an adrenaline rush you'll never forget.

Bimini - Game Fishing

Some say game fishing in Bimini is as good as it gets. Most of the hotels, restaurants and fishing charters are found in Alice Town, North Bimini—where Ernest Hemingway lived in the 1930s.

Other than being the game fishing capital of the world, Bimini is a place to chill and live for the day. You may want to extend your visit.

Eleuthera - Scuba

The island of Eleuthera is a place to snorkel and dive and an escape rich with quiet charm.
A
ttractions include shallow, mid and deep reef sites and areas with both new, old and historical wrecks. Pink sand beaches surround Eleuthera and breathtaking views of the sea and Mt. Alvernia can be had from the tops of hills in sparsely populated Bannerman Town. Eleuthera is romantic and private, making it the perfect travel nurse getaway alone or with a partner.

Travel nursing is so much easier when you’re fit. So it’s time to ask: “Are you getting enough exercise lately?”

"Nurses who stay fit and healthy make the most of the travel nursing experience."
- Valerie Podwill,
50 States Recruiter

Is exercise a bad word?
Only vigorous exercise that gets the heart pumping counts as exercise according to the American Heart Association. If you’re a travel nurse who walks for exercise, get those arms swinging and try to keep the pace at 3 to 5 miles per hour.

Walk briskly one to two miles a day or more. For joggers, a faster pace over a shorter distance is better than a slow, long run. And if aerobics is your thing, travel nurses should keep the workout burning for at least 20 to 30 minutes straight.

1.  Fitness amenities and gyms are typically available to travel nurses at the housing complex, the hospital or both.     The travel nurse should get acquainted with these. Also, many hospitals offer fitness programs for nurse staff.

2.  On your days off, include at least one cardiovascular activity that lasts an hour or more such as extended walks,     biking, hiking, swimming, white water rafting, travel nurse horseback riding etc.

3.  Massage therapy could be one of the best things to ever happen to you. Plenty of travel nurses and others at     the hospital can recommend a good massage therapist. Get a full body massage twice a month and find that even     after one treatment, your mobility, circulation and posture are all improved.

4.  Swimming offers one of the most complete low impact workouts of all. The body is more limber in the pool and     the natural pressure of the water massages travel nurse muscles, skin and veins as you pass through it.

50 States Staffing Consultants are always happy to help travel nurse candidates find assignments that best suit their lifestyle. Housing accommodations are often located close to parks and bike trails and include pools and fitness amenities where available. Whether you choose a travel nursing job in the city, on a resort, or in a remote rural area, there will always be ways to stay fit and healthy and perform at the top of your game!
