Today's tough economy means that travel nursing is a better career choice than ever. The premium travel nursing salaries and benefits that travel nurses earn have become even more important to your financial well being. But with the changes in the healthcare market, the travel nursing landscape is changing, too. Fact: there are just as many travel nursing jobs posted today as in the past; the difference is location and start date requirements.
Let's say that your consultant has submitted you for a great position. The salary is high, the location is great, and you'll be doing work you really want to do. How can you do everything possible to make sure the hospital selects you? Herewith, some coaching from the experts at 50 States Staffing. |

|
| PICK ME! (HOW TO GET THE JOB YOU WANT) |
| |
1. Be ready to go. Many hospital managers are not considering profiles that are more than 4 weeks out. They want a nurse ASAP. In today's economy, hospitals are finding it hard to project needs months in advance. Many posted positions are for immediate start dates. The good news: the more urgent the need, the higher the pay. |
|
| |
2. Consider any job offers quickly. We've found that many hospitals are taking the first travel nurse who accepts the job after an interview. Keeping your options open is great, but if you've got an offer you like, it pays to strike while the iron is hot. |
|
| |
3. Stay open regarding start dates. Some hospitals only consider a traveler profile that works with their orientation dates. Why? Some hospitals only do one orientation a month. Let our consultants guide you with a suggested start date. They'll know which start dates are most likely to result in an interview or offer. |
|
| |
4. Be flexible on shift, days of the week, willingness to float. We know that this kind of flexibility isn't always your ideal, but generally if you can remain flexible, you will have a real competitive advantage over other travel nurses. |
|
| |
5. Do research on the hospital before your travel nursing job interview. Our consultants will provide excellent details on the unit and hospital so you can ask your interviewer relevant questions. If you know something about the area in advance, the interviewer will know that you understand your role in a larger capacity. You are not only going to work in the hospital, but also become part of the community, if only for a while. |
|
| |
6. Ask your consultant where the best travel nurse jobs are. For example, we're seeing more demand, and consequently, higher pay on Washington travel nursing jobs, California travel nursing jobs and Ohio travel nursing jobs. Your consultant will be able to suggest travel nurse jobs in your specialty where the offers are the most lucrative. |

| SURVEY RESULTS ... |
|
| IF YOU HAD A FREE GAS CARD THIS SUMMER, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? |

| Travel Nurses Dream Drives • |
|

Recent survey puts the Pacific Coast Highway at #1 |
|
| |
With gas prices soaring these days, travel nurses were recently asked where they would most like to travel if they were given a free gas card. The survey asked nurses to choose from:
• The Blue Ridge Mountains
• The Great Lakes
• The Pacific Coast Highway
• The Famous Route 66
And the clear winner – with 40% of the vote – was the Pacific Coast Highway. |
Most fans of the PCH noted its beauty and its jaw-dropping ocean views. One nurse said:
| “I imagine the Pacific views, craggy cliffs, the sunset … and driving white knuckled. But what a thrill it would be!” |
Even with transportation costs soaring, the dream of the open road is still alive and well. That’s why 50 States Staffing is offering a pre-paid gas card on selected travel nursing jobs — with the goal of providing travel nurses with more disposable income.

CONSULTANT PROFILE |

Meet Your Placement Consultant -
Lauren Hiering • |
|
| |
This Consultant Makes Fans and Friends Among her Travel Nurses |
|
| |
Taking Care of Business — and Clients
Lauren Hiering is one of 50 States Staffing's most awesome consultants. Just ask David J, an ORT on a travel nursing job in Phoenix. David called 50 States Staffing to tell us that Lauren has taken care of his entire travel nurse assignment without a hitch. He now has a great work environment, a great apartment and he has absolutely the best recruiter in Lauren.
A graduate of Florida Atlantic University (close to 50 States' corporate offices in Boca Raton, Florida), Lauren studied Finance. She worked in South Florida's buzzing real estate industry, and a little over a year ago, she decided to put her organizational and people skills to work at 50 States.
|
"I like talking to my travel nurses about the places they've been — and the places they would like to go," says Lauren. A devotee of the South Florida lifestyle, and onetime competitive volleyball player, Lauren likes spending weekends at the beach with friends, reading (especially murder mysteries), and hanging out with the family dog — a Yorkie named Nicholas.
Lauren's tips for first time travel nurses
Lauren says that most of her new travel nurses are concerned about benefits, schedules and logistics. But she also makes sure to remind them to bring along some personal items from home like family photos. She says, "If you can, bring along a friend, family member, or a pet. It's one of the best ways to feel comfortable on a new travel nursing assignment."
What Makes 50 States a Better Travel Nursing Company?
Says Lauren, "I think that what separates us from the competition is our attention to detail and our customer service. We're always trying to do the best we possibly can for our travel nurses." |
