| DEMAND RISING FOR TRAVEL NURSES IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST |
| Staff Nurses Switch to Travel Nursing • |
| |
Study shows more nurses prefer benefits of travel |
| |
The ongoing nurse shortage, coupled with heightened interest in the benefits of travel nursing, means more staff nurses are choosing to travel, especially to the Pacific Northwest where demand is high. More than half of the nurse respondents in a recent Medical News Today survey said that travel nursing is more rewarding than working as a permanent nurse, with an overwhelming percentage rating flexibility and pay as the primary reasons for travel nursing.
Other high-ranking reasons for switching to travel include fewer hospital politics |
and the spontaneity and excitement of meeting new people and experiencing new places. Travel RN, Nicole Gohring, says:
| “I’ve never had to miss a wedding and I always spend Christmas with family and friends. I planned to travel nurse for only a year at first, but it’s going on five now and the perks and flexibility are tough to beat.” |
“With the up tick in travel nursing jobs comes the flexibility to renew assignments, opt for a new location or return home,” reports 50 States' VP of Recruitment. “This flexibility has more permanent position nurses requesting traveling nurse assignments in high paying healthcare markets such as Seattle, Washington State, and Northern California, where we have an increase of 32% in job postings.”
| |
“Salaries for permanent positions have flat lined due to the cooling economy. Nurses are shifting to travel nursing, which often pays up to 20% more than staff work and includes benefits like free private housing, free health insurance, flexible scheduling and time off.”

What do hospitals expect from travel nurses? |
| |
Sometimes it seems like hospitals expect everything and the kitchen sink, too! According to 50 States' Clinical Coordinators (who have worked on both sides of the fence),
these are the most important qualities hospitals look for in a travel nurse:
| • |
Ability to "hit the road running," work competently after initial orientation |
| • |
Exceptional clinical skills |
| • |
Great customer service skills |
| |
| |
| |
OUR HIT-THE-GROUND-RUNNING TIPS |
| |
1. Listen — and ask questions. Your orientation is an important time to ask questions and get clarification on procedures. You can't know everything on the first day. Focus, take notes if you need to, hey — draw yourself a map if it helps! |
| |
2. Use travel nursing to build your clinical skills.
The more you travel nurse, the more exposure you have to new and different procedures and techniques. Each assignment can make you a more valuable asset for the next one. (Not to mention improving your bottom line!) |
| |
3. Remember, customer service is 360° Sure, customer service applies to patient care, but it also applies to peers, supervisors and support staff. Whew! So if it occasionally feels like no one is giving YOU any customer service, then take some time to pamper yourself. Reward yourself with a massage, a trip to the museum, or a dinner out with someone special in your new location. |
| |
4. Be confident ...you're working with the best!
We know that 50 States' Staffing travel nurses are the best in the business —and so do the hospitals we work with. You were individually selected for your travel nursing job, and the hospital needs you! Plus, you've got one of the most respected travel nursing companies in your corner. |
