Five travel nursing top tips for soothing those opening night nerves

Your new nursing colleaguesNo matter how many times you’ve done it, first days on a travel nursing job are always a challenge. Will your co-workers welcome you? What are the supervisors like? What kind of patients will you treat? Where are the vending machines?

Will you be able to wrap your mind around new procedures and equipment? Will you remember where you parked your car?

First-day advice hasn't changed much since when you were a kid: do your best, be friendly, and smile
when you can!

Five TRIED & TRUE FIRST DAY TIPS
  1. Use your orientation time well. Your orientation is an important time to ask questions and get clarification on procedures. No one knows absolutely everything on the first day. Open a dialogue now, and it will be easier to talk once you’re well into your travel nursing job.
  2. Remember, the hospital chose you.

The facility reviewed your qualifications and skill list. In all likelihood,
they chose you over other qualified candidates. And they really want
you there. Travel nurses fulfill a critical need when hospitals are short on staff.
You’re important to them. Travelers are a welcome addition
to a unit or floor. Help has arrived!

Ask about local attractions3. Ask around about the local scene Experienced travel nurses will tell you that one of the best ways to get comfortable with co-workers is to keep an open mind, listen a lot, ask questions, and be enthusiastic about your new location. Most of your colleagues are proud of their hometown and are happy to share their insider “secrets.” (And we've got great jobsfor you to discover in all 50 states.)

4. Share your hobbies and interests.Travel_Nursing_Course
We know one travel nurse who always samples the local chili He asks for recommendations on the best bowl of chili in town – and more often than not he finds a couple of people who want to join him for a taste test. One of our fitness-minded travelers is an avid biker who seeks out a local riding group and the most scenic bike trails in the area.

5. Give it a little time ... you’ll get there! Oh, and about remembering where you parked your car … you might just have to write that spot number down.

5 Minutes Q&A with 50 States Clinical Resource Manager, Deb Bacurin
Deb BacurinQ: What did you do before you were a Clinical Resource Manager for 50 States Staffing?
Deb: I had worked as a nurse on the floor for over 11 years. The work was rewarding and demanding, physically and mentally. At some point I decided I wanted to see the country, so I moved into travel nursing. I always enjoyed ED when I was traveling. You never know what's coming through the door, and you become a jack-of-all-trades.
Q: Then you came on board with us at 50 States. Why? I wanted to use the skills I had developed as a travel nurse, and I was at a point in my life where I wanted to be a leader and a mentor to other nurses. This job seemed like a great opportunity to do that.
Working at 50 States Staffing allows me to use my clinical and people skills from my nursing days, and grow as a manager and negotiator.
Q: So what does a Clinical Resource Manager do ? I'm a liaison between hospitals and our travel nurses. I advocate for travel nursing in general and help clarify what hospitals need from travel nurses. Sometimes nurses have questions about trying travel nursing, and I'm able to respond. And sometimes hospitals don't know how travel nursing could fit into their programs. I point out the advantages of working with travel nurses, and tell hospitals about the superior standards of 50 States Staffing.
Q: How important is The Joint Commission certification (like 50 States' Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission)? It's critical. I think that all hospitals — and travel nurses — should only be working with The Joint Commission certified companies.
