In order to work at any healthcare facility throughout the state of Colorado, all Surgical Assistants and Surgical Technologists must have a current license issue by the state’s Department of Regulatory Agencies. Click here to review the new policy, apply for licensing or have questions answered.

surgical technologist jobsYOU MUST REGISTER BY APRIL 1, 2011 to apply for surgical technologist jobs in Colorado or to keep working as a surgical technician or assistant. No exceptions.

This is new legislation in Colorado, and was enacted to ensure hospitals and surgery centers do not inadvertently hire surgical technologists with a criminal background or with a history of jeopardizing patient safety. Additionally, the new law will allow employers to share information with other potential healthcare employers concerning impaired work function, drug diversion, patient abuse and violent crimes.

The policy comes in response to a surgical technician who exposed 6,000 patients to hepatitis C after using syringes on herself then returning them for patient care use. Lawmakers in the state hope the licensing law will prevent similar incidents in the future. Colorado is one of about six states that require the registration and licensing of surgical technologists.
